Just as requested, we’re going full steam ahead with the first official STP photo contest with…YOUR photos (not ours!). Details?

Subject: Light (creative ways to use light)
Time frame: This weekend (8/26-8/28 at midnight)
Fine print: You cannot do a portrait. The usage of light must unique and different, and not something you see everyday. If you are professional, you can’t enter. If you are related to me, you can enter, but you can’t win.

And one more thing…GOOD LUCK!

Email your photos to me at cathy@seizethephoto.com. I will put all of the photos online on my Facebook page for voting. You must be a fan of STP on Facebook in order to vote, and voting will occur 8/29-9/2. There will be TWO winners, a fan favorite (based on votes) and my favorite (based on photographic skill). Both winners will receive a free session from STP and a mystery gift (that of course is REALLY awesome!). We’ll reveal that later!

I have the freedom to write to you on this blog right now because of a special group of people, men and women…our nation’s military veterans. The greatest sacrifice one could give, as it is written, is to lay down one’s life for another. Although we as regular citizens could never fathom what that means, it’s a line item on the day-to-day job description for our soldiers. They literally put their life on the line every single day so that we can continue to live in this great country and do the things we love to do. Although we often take that for granted and will never understand what our soldiers go through until we step into their boots, what we CAN do is honor them.

The longest running parade and veteran celebration in the nation is coming up next week in Newton, NC. You can find out details here or here. One, I would encourage you to attend so that we can celebrate the hard work and achievements that our veterans have accomplished and give them a small bit of the huge thanks they deserve. Two, never forget to thank a veteran, even if you can’t make it!

Also, what would a celebration be like without STP celebrating too?
Starting today, we’re running a special at STP that honors veterans and their families. Here are the details:

One free session for a veteran of any war, male or female
Sessions can include a headshot OR a family session.
Veteran must be present at the session.
All prints 8×10 and below are 40% off regular prices for veterans only.
Sessions must be booked by August 18 and completed by September 30.

Please help us spread the word so that we can do our part to thank our nation’s finest citizens. Don’t ever forget or take for granted to sacrifice these fine men and women make for us every day!

I need some photos with this post, right? Let me introduce you to two of my favorite veterans, my grandfathers. I miss them both dearly, but cherish the respect and love for my country that they both instilled in me. Its because of wonderful men like them that this country is as great as it is!

I believe in diversity. I believe in supporting and undergirding raw, untapped talent in new and upcoming artists. You know when you get that gut feeling that something is really awesome? Usually you should follow that gut feeling and run with it, right? With that said, Chris, I’ve found a new associate photographer. I’m sorry.

Way back in September 2010, I had one of the coolest AND one of the scariest times of my life happen while flying to NYC. However, the product of an eleven hour delay/flight into NYC proved very rewarding. I was able to capture and film the New York City skyline at night…something that’s going to be one of those rare things in life. The city at night is always gorgeous, but seeing it from the sky is something else. I saw glittering city lights, glowing freeways, and the hustle and bustle of the City that Never Sleeps. It was amazing.

Just so you can get a little chuckle (and background info), it took me eleven hours to get to NYC…FLYING. If you have ever made the drive, that’s the same amount of time it takes to DRIVE there. My entire frustration/meltdown/dramatic episode was caught on Facebook, and I’m sure my friends who saw it were quite amused. My little country bumpkin self was scared to death…I was alone, diverted to a state I wasn’t supposed to be in, and not knowing what in the world was happening. I got to the airport at 11AM and we finally took off at 6PM. While circling over JFK the first time, the pilot said “JFK is closed.” Loosely translated, the plane was running out of fuel and we needed to get on the ground ASAP. We didn’t learn about this until we landed in ALLENTOWN, PA!!!! I was freaking out because my husband was in NYC and I was racking my brain trying to figure out how I was going to get to him. I was scared. Anyway, all is well and I finally got to NYC that night, and Lee was there waiting for me with a big hug.

Anyway, I’m OBVIOUSLY fine, AND I have some really cool pictures and video to share with you guys. I hope you enjoy them, and I wish you happy flying and no delays!

Coming off the heels of a very successful social good campaign, I would have never realized how much the response from the community would have touched my heart. I never realized how one little week of supporting an awesome cause would garner so much support from the community, and even folks we’ve never even met! With that said, THANK YOU. I am amazed with how generous each of you are and how excited all of you were to help us raise money for the BackPack programs in Catawba and Burke Counties. Without all of you, it wouldn’t be possible, and Lee, Chris, and myself would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts. With your help, we were able to raise over $800 to support feeding hungry children in our community!!! I would personally like to thank two very special people in my life, Marilyn Price (the original Snooky!) and Cindy Yount for making additional donations to BackPack…we are so grateful to both of you for your support! It only takes $90 to feed a child each weekend for an ENTIRE school year; that means we were able to feed an additional 8-9 children over the course of an entire year! How exciting!

Because of this, children won’t be so focused on rumbling bellies in school, and will be able to focus more on schoolwork. Their grades will improve, and will improve chances of high school graduation and success in their careers. More children will graduate college and will go on to further their careers and be able make a better life for themselves and their families. A little action on your part has made an exponential impact in our surrounding communities, and we thank you!

Be on the lookout for more events that will support the BackPack program. They are entirely funded by private donations and are not funded by the government, so they depend solely on us. Please help us keep this program going year after year so hungry children don’t have to suffer. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE!!!!

STP came out on top with the most new fans, but man did BackPack win some major exposure and support! That’s awesome! A VERY valiant effort was made by Chris Garner at TPS Photography…he had me shaking in my boots MANY times. I have had so much fun with all of you and thank you so much for your support. Chris and I were able to raise over $700 for the BackPack program from new fans alone, not counting other pledges made. Thank you so much!!!! You know what this means, right?
